To Share or Not to Share – That is the Question

Posted on Friday, June 25, 2021

Long gone are the days of the 1960’s where people left school, got a job and moved into their own home before the age of 20. This is reflected by the fact that homeownership has seen a steady decline since 2003 from 70.9% down to 63% in 2018. Could it be just mere coincidence that this decline has overlapped with the increase in the private rental market?

Unfortunately, the rental market has also seen a huge increase in rent values, with the average rent in the UK at £997 per month (which is up 4% on last year). This means that as well as being priced out of the homeowner market, some people are even finding themselves priced out of renting.

With mortgages being a far-off dream for many, and renting becoming uneconomical, the prospect of house-sharing is growing in popularity for many professionals, as a way of being able to save for a house deposit whilst maintaining independence.

So, what is professional shared accommodation? It is a house with multiple rooms which are let to people of all ages who are employed in a variety of professions. There may be communal living areas, such as kitchen and living room, which are shared by all the housemates.

Living with other people is a major decision that needs careful consideration, but the benefits certainly outweigh any negatives.

The Bigger, The Better

A major benefit for shared accommodation is that because you are paying only your portion of the overall rent, you may be able to afford a bigger or better located house than if you were trying to rent on your own. For instance, Tiili have fantastic rooms within large, spacious houses and many have private parking, enclosed gardens and are in sought after locations around Norwich. What also sets Tiili apart from other letting agents is that we have plenty of en-suite rooms available and depending on your budget, you could even rent a room with a kitchenette.

Bills, Bills, Bills

The great thing about shared accommodation via Tiili, is that all bills are included within the monthly rental price. This means that you don’t have to worry about finding more money before payday comes round to pay utilities as these are paid directly by the landlord. Another perk of renting through Tiili, is that many of our house shares also include a cleaner within the rent amount. This means that when you are at home, you have more time to relax than worry about whose turn it is to clean.

Neighbours Become Best Friends

Having bedrooms next door to each other and seeing each other in the communal areas, means you and your housemates will get the chance to be sociable. Lots of room mates cook together and this can lead to great friendships being forged between housemates. Living with other people can give you access to a readymade social life and if you do not fancy a night in on your own, you might be able to share the evening with your fellow renters.

The are many more benefits for choosing shared accommodation and the team at Tiili are specialists is matching the right person to the right home. We have great relationships with all our landlords and only properties of the highest standard are on our books. The team at Tiili are available for advice and we have a 24/7 online system where you can report any problems you may have.
